Emilia Sjostrand, a junior at San Jose State and a six-time Mountain West Conference champion in the horizontal jumps along with an indoor and outdoor All-American for the Spartans, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in both the long jump and triple jump March 8-9 at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass. Sjostrand qualified for both the long jump and triple jump for the third consecutive NCAA meet, in addition to last year's indoor final in Albuquerque, N.M., as well as the outdoor championship in June in Austin, Texas. She is one of three female athletes scheduled to participate in both the long jump and triple jump in Boston, in addition to Jamaican standout Ackelia Smith of Texas and Russian competitor Victoria Gorlova from Virginia Tech. Sjostrand revisits the Mountain West Conference indoor final Feb. 22-24 in Albuquerque and surpassing the 14-meter mark for the first time in her career in the triple jump with a 46-2.75 (14.09m) performance, in addition to equaling her long jump personal-best effort at 21-3.25 (6.48m) to sweep both titles for the second year in a row. She examines closing in on the 2000 Swedish indoor triple jump record of 46-4 (14.12m) held by Camilla Johansson, along with pursuing the absolute triple jump all-time mark of 46-10.75 (14.29m) achieved outdoors in 2008 by Carolina Kluft. Sjostrand revisits the challenges and obstacles she had to overcome upon her arrival at San Jose State and explains how significant and meaningful it has been to develop and improve at the rate she has during the past two years. She expresses gratitude for San Jose State jumps coach T.J. Harris and his leadership, guidance, insight and training approach, in addition to being thankful for the arrival of Olympic gold medalist Tianna Madison, who joined the Spartans' coaching staff during the winter. Sjostrand, who earned All-America first-team indoor honors in the triple jump and first-team outdoor recognition in the triple jump last year, shares her aspirations to make the podium in both events in Boston, in addition to her goals to secure an NCAA title, along with potentially surpassing the Swedish triple jump record. She also looks forward to continued improvement during the outdoor season and the possibilities of jumping at the European Athletics Championships in Rome and the Paris Olympics.
