Colorado State senior Lexie Keller, the program record holder in the women's pentathlon and No. 5 all-time in the Mountain West Conference with 4,105 points, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her debut March 11 at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Keller, a graduate of La Cueva High in New Mexico, reflects on the Rams capturing the women's team title at the conference indoor meet Feb. 24-26 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. She revisits the challenges of competing in not only the pentathlon, but also the 60-meter hurdles, long jump and high jump for Colorado State. Keller examines her lifetime-best performance Feb. 4 at the same arena at the Don Kirby Invitational to secure the program record and ascend into the top five in conference history, and shares how meaningful it was to be able to achieve the score in her home state. She shares the emotions of waiting for the 16 qualifiers to be posted for the Division 1 indoor pentathlon championship, and how grateful she was to make the cutoff and earn her first berth to an NCAA final. Keller analyzes the depth of the field and examines how there are less than 70 points separating the Nos. 6-15 entries, and how much she has benefited from competing against fellow combined events standouts Sara Absten of San Diego State and Nicola Ader of Nevada during her career. She also explains how her top efforts from each of her pentathlon competitions this season, along with her improvement in the shot put, give her the potential to approach the 4,200-point barrier, which would also elevate Keller to the No. 2 competitor in Mountain West indoor history, trailing only Amy Menlove of Brigham Young at 4,365 points. Keller expresses gratitude for the collaboration she has with Colorado State multi-events coach Ryan Baily, who returned to the Rams' program in June following a year away from coaching, as well as head coach Brian Bedard, who also mentors the team's throwers. She also speaks about how significant it is to be able to share her first NCAA Indoor Championships experience with teammate, Mountain West champion and Canadian indoor 400-meter record holder Lauren Gale, also making her debut at the Division 1 indoor meet after racing in the 4x100 relay at the 2019 outdoor championships in Austin, Texas.
