New Mexico sophomore All-American Gracelyn Larkin, the Mountain West Conference women's indoor 3,000-meter champion, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing March 11 in the 5,000-meter final at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Larkin, representing Canada, examines making history with teammates Adva Cohen, Emma Heckel and Amelia Mazza-Downie, as New Mexico is the first women's team all-time in Division 1 to have four qualifiers in the indoor 5,000 championship race. The Lobos previously had three qualifiers in 2019 in both the 3,000 and 5,000 finals at the CrossPlex, but had never produced four entries in any distance race at the indoor championship meet. Arkansas was the only women's prorgram ever to have four qualifiers in any distance event, achieving the feat in the 3,000 final in 2000 and again in 2021, with North Carolina State having four entries this season in the 3,000. Larkin analyzes how valuable it was for New Mexico to compete Dec. 4 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University, with eight athletes from the 5,000 race earning qualifying marks to secure their spot in the top 16 for the Division 1 indoor championship meet, including three of the four Lobos. Mazza-Downie qualified by winning the conference title. Larkin, 21, revisits having the conference indoor championship meet at the Albuquerque Convention Center and how meaningful it was to sweep the top four spots in the 3,000 final, which she won in 9:17.18, in addition to the Lobos securing the top three places in the 5,000 championship. She also reflects on her brother Matthew Larkin winning the men's 800 crown in 1:49.14, and how significant the achievements of both siblings winning titles on the same day was for their family. She shares how the experiences of finishing 21st and 25th to earn All-America honors at the Division 1 cross country championships held last March and in November will benefit her in another elite field at the CrossPlex. Larkin also explains how being an exercise science major has helped her develop into a smarter, more well-rounded athlete when it comes to her training and recovery following competitions.
